The Sunshine Coat
with Ketakii Jewson-Brown
2022~2023
The Sunshine Coat is a community arts/ fashion and textiles/ photographic project led by Shaye Hardisty and Ketakii Jewson Brown. Together they made a collection of 17 coats and accompanying photography in response to Nambaa. They worked with 11 collaborating artists with a love of Nambour to showcase the diverse and rich arts community that resides in the town as well as highlighting many different perspectives and creative mediums.
Through community participation they created The Community Coat, which featured more than 250 patches created by the community over 12 months. This happened across 14 workshops within Nambour locations, plus 7 workshops with Sunshine Coast Libraries, with more than 180 participants.
The Sunshine Coat also had a strong focus on sustainability and increasing awareness of the issues surrounding the fashion industry. They achieved this through strict rules around the types of fabrics they could use and showcasing their fabric waste as part of the final exhibition. The Sustainable Fashion Conversation was also an incredibly successful event, with 5 local slow fashion advocates in discussion with Deborah Fisher (USC fashion program).
The Sunshine Coat saw more than 4,500 visitors to the Old Ambulance Stattion Gallery during the exhibition in April, 2023. This includes patrons for three sold-out events; the opening night, the sustainable fashion conversation and the closing party/ runway show. Staff at the Old Ambulance Station Gallery claimed it to be the most successful exhibition they had ever had at the Gallery.
