Hello, I’m Shaye.
I am an artist predominantly working with textiles on Gubbi Gubbi/ Kabi Kabi Land. I love sewing, patternmaking, quilting, embroidery and exploring the many different ways to be with fabric. I also love working in community arts practices and connecting with people. I currently work at 2nd Space Studio in Namba, QLD.
I use my art practice as both a conduit for connecting with people in a meaningful way and gently challenging the constraints of my own anxiety. My process is about letting things unfold, unravel, collectively mend, and patch together to materialise new connections. Tangible, tangential invitations towards joy. I have struggled with anxiety since I was a teenager and I can be devastatingly self-critical, so I rely on my arts practice to constantly push my edges and find myself within my whirling feelings.
I love collaborating with my darling friend Ketakii Jewson-Brown. We make good art together, as well as create super fun events. We love redefining the metrics of success and making the world a better place through our collaborative projects. You can read an interview with us here.
I am obsessed with the sustainability of my practice and keen to rant at everyone about sustainability in the fashion industry. I stick to organic and ethically sourced fibres, only using synthetic fabrics if I source them second-hand. All my textile waste is sent to Upparrel to be recycled into useful things.
Mmm… what else…
I am madly in love with my family; my darling husband and two fierce daughters. My husband is an incredible musician (check him out here) and sometimes we play music together in public. It’s very scary but something inside me loves these opportunities that push me way beyond my comfort zone and stretch my human experience. I play the Banjo, write songs and sing. We have a pretty magical life.
